To preserve the beauty and integrity of your grainsack textiles:

Washing Instructions

1. Our grainsacks can be machine washed. Best on a warm cycle using a mild, natural detergent. Wash sets together
2. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that can damage natural fibers
3. Air or line dry when possible, Iron when damp

Storage Recommendations

• Store folded in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
• Avoid plastic storage containers which can trap moisture

Stain Removal

• Address spills immediately by blotting (not rubbing)
• For stubborn stains, create a paste with baking soda and water- or a natural French vegetable soap if you have one
• Test any stain treatment on an inconspicuous area first

The Rich History of Grainsack Textiles

Our Sourcing Journey - before Maison Brocante began I had actually already visited quite a few brocantes and flea markets with a friend who lived in the South of France. At that time, picking up interesting finds was a hobby, and it was mainly clothing and bags that I came away with. I remember picking up a white ‘Lanvin’ dress, and at the time I wasn’t even aware of the high end designer name of Lanvin (!) I just really liked the dress...other lovely pick ups were vintage umbrellas and leather vintage French Gladstone bags. On our very first 'buying trip' in France I was initially looking for French vintage kitchenalia, enamelware, copper pans, porcelain plates etc... But I soon found that what I was drawn to most (and literally my first purchase) were the piles of beautiful white linens, you know the type, really textured, thick, woven edges, monograms, beautiful shades of white and cream, having aged beautifully over time. To this date I haven’t been able to find a manufacturer who has been able to replicate the unique qualities of real French vintage linens. Although we have thankfully been able to weave the beautiful grainsack..

We began to visit traditional French linen mills a few years into Maison Brocante - I had become tired of endless photographing of individual antiques and pieces and wanted to offer something beautiful but could be repeated. Our visits in Northern France showed me first hand the capabilities of these lovely traditional mills, producing the most exquisite linens in dreamy colours. 

When I discovered grainsack fabric (this took a solo trip to Paris with two suitcases on the Eurostar) my collection became complete and this fabric has been our most popular in the linen collection ever since.

Authentic grainsack fabric was traditionally hand-woven from hemp, flax, or linen fibers by European farmers and textile workers. Most notably produced in France, Germany, and Eastern European countries, each region developed distinctive weaving patterns and decorative elements:

• French Grainsacks: Often feature delicate blue or red stripes with occasional monograms
• German Grainsacks: Known for bold stripes and occasional stenciled numbers or letters
• Eastern European Styles: Frequently showcase intricate hand-embroidery or colorful pattern work

Lessons from Our Collection

When I first began collecting grainsack fabrics, I always look for authentic pieces, generally in French Brocantes and at the antique fairs in the UK (Newark Antiques, Ardingly etc) There are still lots of genuine sellers of antique grainsacks, they are harder to come by and more expensive these days however they are still available and are wonderful for small projects - perfect for cushions, table runners, lampshades, even stair runners when sewn together.  However, for me - the ability to be able to sew larger items such as Grainsack Roman Blinds and Curtains, table runners for big tables, large cushion sets, bespoke handmade bench and seat cushions - was key. I needed a grainsack with a wider width and repeatable stripes. Our grainsacks are a beautiful authentic plain weave, woven on mechanical looms, and are 100% unbleached natural cotton- they are a beautiful weight and slub - the perfect fabrics for authentic French country style
